  6. Mac OS 7.6.1 Update is a set of software enhancements that
  7. delivers improvements in stability for Macintosh and Mac
  8. OS-compatible computers running Mac OS 7.6. After installing
  9. the update, the Mac OS version on the computer will be Mac
  10. OS 7.6.1.
  11.  
  12. This software is available in two formats (disk images and
  13. "Net Install"):
  14.  
  15. 1.  Four Disk Copy compressed images, which require Disk
  16. Copy 6.1 or later to use. Download this software to your
  17. hard drive and then double-click it to use it. Disk Copy 6.1
  18. is available in the Utilities folder here.
  19.  
  20. 2.  A complete Mac OS 7.6.1 Update "Net Install".  It includes
  21. all software from all 4 Mac OS 7.6.1 Update disk images. 
  22. This posting is provided as a convenience for those
  23. customers who:
  24. - want to download just one file.
  25. - want a pre-configured "Net Install" to place on their
  26.   hard drive or on a server.

  40. Who can use Mac OS 7.6.1 Update?
  41.  
  42. Mac OS 7.6.1 Update improves the reliability of Mac OS
  43. computers.
  44.  
  45. If you are using a system software version prior to Mac OS
  46. 7.6, you must upgrade to Mac OS 7.6 before you install this
  47. update. Additionally, some newer PowerBooks, introduced
  48. after Mac OS 7.6, cannot use this update. To see if your
  49. computer can use this update, see "How Do I Know What
  50. Version of System Software I Have?" below.
  51.  
  52. IMPORTANT Do not install this update if you have a Macintosh
  53. Performa 4400 or a Power Macintosh 4400, 5500, 6500, 7300,
  54. 8600, or 9600 series computer. You can obtain Mac OS 7.6 and
  55. Mac OS Update 7.6.1 through the Mac OS Up-To-Date program.
  56. If you have a PowerBook 3400, you need to download the Mac
  57. OS 7.6.1 Update for the PowerBook 3400. For more
  58. information, see the Mac OS Up-To-Date Web site at

  62. How do I know what version of system software I have?
  63.  
  64. To find out what system software version your computer is
  65. using, follow these steps:
  66.  
  67. 1.  Make sure you are in the Finder. (To switch to the
  68. Finder, open the Application menu, marked with an icon in
  69. the upper-right corner of your screen, and choose Finder.)
  70.  
  71. 2.  Open the Apple menu, located at the upper-left
  72. corner of your screen.
  73.  
  74. * If the first item in the Apple menu is called About This
  75. Computer, choose this item from the menu. In the box that
  76. appears, check the words in the upper-right corner. If you
  77. see the word "Enabler" under the line that reads "System
  78. Software 7.6," you cannot install this update. If you see
  79. "PowerBook 3400 1.0," then you need to download the Mac OS
  80. 7.6.1 Update for the PowerBook 3400. If the update is not
  81. currently available, it should be available soon. If there
  82. is no text between the line that reads "System Software 7.6"
  83. and the copyright notification, you can proceed with the
  84. installation.
  85.  
  86. * If the first item in the Apple menu is called About This
  87. Macintosh, you have an earlier version of system software.
  88. You must upgrade to Mac OS 7.6 before you can install this
  89. update.
  90.  
  91. What's included in the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update?
  92.  
  93. After you install the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update, you should notice
  94. improved stability, as well as the following fixes and
  95. enhancements:
  96.  
  97. * Nearly all Type 11 errors eliminated Type 11 errors force
  98. you to restart the computer without saving your work. Most
  99. of these errors are now properly classified as Type 1 or
  100. Type 2 errors, which cause the active application to quit,
  101. but do not force you to restart the computer. Type 11 errors
  102. occur while using "native" applications used by computers
  103. with PowerPC processors.
  104.  
  105. IMPORTANT When you get an error that forces a program to
  106. quit, you should still save your work in other open programs
  107. and restart the computer.
  108.  
  109. * Type 112 errors eliminated Type 112 errors, which occurred
  110. when using some multimedia applications, have been
  111. eliminated.
  112.  
  113. * CFM-68K Runtime Enabler included for computers with 68030
  114. and 68040 processors Computers with 68030 and 68040
  115. processors can now use programs that require the CFM-68K
  116. Runtime Enabler. The CFM-68K Runtime Enabler is a system
  117. extension which allows application programs to share code
  118. resources. Because of a problem with this extension, it was
  119. not included with Mac OS 7.6. This problem has been fixed.
  120.  
  121. Apple products that use the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler include
  122. OpenDoc, the LaserWriter 8.4 driver, Apple Telecom software
  123. 3.0 and later, and the Apple Media Tool. Applications from
  124. other companies that require the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler
  125. include America Online 3.0 and Internet Explorer 3.0. (If
  126. you continue to experience problems with non-Apple programs
  127. that use the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler, contact the
  128. manufacturer.)
  129.  
  130. * Improved compatibility with serial devices when using
  131. Performa 5400 and 6400 and PowerBook 3400 computers
  132. Equipment connected to the serial port now communicates
  133. correctly with these computers. (Previously, some devices
  134. using the serial port were not recognized by these computers
  135. if the devices were connected when the computer started up.)
  136.  
  137. * Infrared problems fixed on PowerBook 1400 and 3400
  138. computers The computer no longer freezes if the infrared
  139. window is blocked when the computer is starting up or
  140. transferring files.
  141.  
  142. * Improved reliability when using large QuickTime files, or
  143. using QuickTime in low-memory situations Application
  144. programs that use QuickTime files work more reliably when
  145. working with large files and when using QuickTime files in
  146. low-memory situations.
  147.  
  148. * Printing improved for Performa and Power Macintosh 5400
  149. and 6400 series computers using non-Apple printers over
  150. LocalTalk networks Performa and Power Macintosh 5400 and
  151. 6400 computers now print at an acceptable speed on non-Apple
  152. printers over a LocalTalk network. (Previously, printing was
  153. very slow.)

  155. * Video applications recognize that MPEG is installed Video
  156. applications, including the Apple Video Player, now
  157. correctly recognize when MPEG software or hardware is
  158. installed.
  159.  
  160. * Storage PC Cards no longer require a utility program to
  161. appear on the desktop PC Cards used for storage now appear
  162. on the desktop when inserted. A mounting utility program is
  163. no longer required.
  164.  
  165. * Only two low-battery messages displayed on PowerBooks
  166. before computer shuts itself down Only two low-battery
  167. messages are displayed, instead of three, before the
  168. computer shuts itself down. The first message appears
  169. approximately two to four minutes before shutdown. The
  170. second occurs approximately ten seconds before shutdown.
  171.  
  172. * PowerBook 1400 computers now wake from sleep faster When
  173. you wake the computer, there is less of a delay before the
  174. screen appears.
  175.  
  176. * Contrast and brightness controls work as expected on
  177. PowerBook 1400 computers The screen will get brighter or
  178. show more contrast when the plus (+) controls are pressed.
  179. Previously, the functionality of the plus (+) and minus (-)
  180. controls were reversed on PowerBook 1400 computers.

  182. * On the PowerBook 3400, the CD-ROM drive works correctly if
  183. inserted when the computer is on The removable CD-ROM drive
  184. now appears correctly on the desktop if it is inserted in
  185. the expansion bay while the computer is on.

  187. * New version of Apple System Profiler IDE-based CD-ROM
  188. drives, such as the built-in CD-ROM drive for the PowerBook
  189. 1400, are now listed in the Apple System Profiler window.
  190.  
  191. * New version of AppleVision software A new version of
  192. AppleVision software improves reliability on computers that
  193. currently use AppleVision monitors.
  194.  
  195. * Graphics acceleration software works correctly with a
  196. universal System Folder Graphics acceleration software now
  197. works correctly when used with a universal System Folder.
  198. Additionally, the Graphics Accelerator extension and the
  199. Graphics Accelerator 2 extension have been merged into the
  200. ATI Graphics extension.
  201.  
  202. * New version of Apple Video Player Video-capture and TV
  203. tuner PC Cards now work correctly on PowerBook 3400
  204. computers. Additionally, all computers can use the
  205. AppleScript scripting language to automate tasks in Apple
  206. Video Player.
  207.  
  208. * Settings in Energy Saver control panel are saved properly
  209. Changes made to automatic startup and shutdown settings are
  210. now saved.
  211.  
  212. * Large files copied between IDE hard disks sometimes
  213. crashed the system Files over 1 MB can now be copied between
  214. two IDE hard disks without causing a system crash.
  215.  
  216. * Better performance when using video-capture expansion
  217. cards and ATI accelerators Video capture is faster on
  218. computers when using video-capture PCI expansion cards with
  219. ATI graphics accelerators.

  221. Besides the bug fixes provided by Mac OS 7.6.1 Update,
  222. several of the bug fixes and features that have been
  223. previously released as extensions are now part of the OS.
  224. You may notice that these extensions have been removed from
  225. the Extensions folder. After installing the Mac OS 7.6.1
  226. Update, you will no longer need these extensions in your
  227. Extensions folder.

  240. Known problems with Mac OS 7.6.1
  241.  
  242. * Monitors Control Panel is not included in "Mac OS 7.6.1
  243. base" and "Mac OS 7.6.1 all" extension manager sets If you
  244. have a computer that does not have the Monitors & Sound
  245. control panel and you select the "Mac OS 7.6.1 base" or "Mac
  246. OS 7.6.1 all" extension manager sets, you will also need to
  247. select the Monitors Control Panel.
  248.  
  249. Known problems with Mac OS 7.6 not fixed with this update
  250.  
  251. * Connectix Speed Doubler disabled when Mac OS 7.6.1 is
  252. installed There is a problem using Speed Doubler versions
  253. 1.3.1 and earlier and version 2.0 with Mac OS 7.6. If you
  254. use one of these Speed Doubler versions, it will be disabled
  255. after you install Mac OS 7.6.1 Update. Connectix is aware of
  256. this problem and is providing a free update. For more
  257. information, see the Connectix Web site at

  259.  
  260. * Versions of several Apple software products compatible
  261. with computers with 68030 and 68040 processors that require
  262. the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler not included with Mac OS 7.6
  263. Because of a problem with the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler, the
  264. extension and compatible versions of several Apple software
  265. products (such as OpenDoc, the LaserWriter 8.4 driver, Apple
  266. Telecom software 3.0 and later, and the Apple Media Tool)
  267. were not included with Mac OS 7.6. The CFM-68K Runtime
  268. Enabler problem has been fixed and computers with 68030 and
  269. 68040 processors can now use programs that require this
  270. extension. The latest version of this software is available
  271. on "Apple SW Updates" on the Internet
  272. (http://www.info.apple.com), America Online (keyword:
  273. AppleComputer), and CompuServe (GO APLSUP). To get a list of
  274. authorized mirror sites on the Internet, access the
  275. following URL:

  278. * LaserWriter 8.3.4 results in an error message when you
  279. print to a file and then drag the resulting file to a
  280. desktop printer If you use the LaserWriter 8.3.4 driver to
  281. print to a file and then drag the resulting file to a
  282. desktop printer, you get a message stating that the print
  283. library is missing. To work around this problem, update your
  284. LaserWriter software to LaserWriter 8.4.1. This software is
  285. available on "Apple SW Updates" on the Internet
  286. (http://www.info.apple.com), America Online (keyword:
  287. AppleComputer), and CompuServe (GO APLSUP). To get a list of
  288. authorized mirror sites on the Internet, access the
  289. following URL:

  291.  
  292. * After you install Mac OS 7.6.1 Update, the easy install
  293. option no longer works for reinstalling Mac OS 7.6 Once you
  294. have installed Mac OS 7.6.1 Update, you can no longer use
  295. the easy install option for reinstalling Mac OS 7.6
  296. (installers cannot update over newer versions of software).
  297. You must use the clean install option to reinstall Mac OS
  298. 7.6. Specific components can be installed using the custom
  299. install option.
  300.  
  301. * Notes on Custom Installs If you perform a custom install
  302. of a component from your Mac OS 7.6 CD (or floppy) and
  303. already have system 7.6.1 running on your system, you may
  304. notice the following warning dialog:  "The file <name of the
  305. component>  already on  <name of your hard drive>  is newer
  306. than what you are about to install. Click Newer to keep the
  307. Newer file, Older to replace that file, or Cancel to stop
  308. installation." You should pick Newer.
  309.  
  310. IMPORTANT After the Mac OS 7.6 install finishes installing
  311. the selected components, you should then reinstall the Mac
  312. OS 7.6.1 Update to ensure that the components you just
  313. installed are up-to-date.
  314.  
  315. * Installing QuickDraw GX for use with a non-Apple printer
  316. If you want to use QuickDraw GX with a non-Apple printer,
  317. you need to obtain a QuickDraw GX printer driver or remove
  318. QuickDraw GX. If QuickDraw GX is installed, you will not be
  319. able to use your non-Apple printer without a GX driver.
  320. Contact your printer vendor for details. (Turning off
  321. QuickDraw(TM) GX in the Extensions Manager will solve this
  322. problem.)
  323.  
  324. *    Using the QuickDraw GX Installer when Adobe Acrobat is
  325. installed If you use the QuickDraw GX Installer to either
  326. install or remove QuickDraw GX and your computer has Adobe
  327. Acrobat installed, Acrobat will display a message about
  328. missing fonts each time the computer is restarted. Reinstall
  329. or turn off Acrobat to stop the warning message. (Turning
  330. off QuickDraw(TM) GX in the Extensions Manager will not
  331. solve the problem.)
  332.  
  333. * Video Startup extension and Apple Video Player improperly
  334. installed by Mac OS 7.6 Mac OS 7.6 improperly installs the
  335. Video Startup extension and the Apple Video Player
  336. application on Macintosh TV. You should throw the Apple
  337. Video Player application and the Video Startup extension in
  338. the trash. If these components are present, the Mac OS 7.6.1
  339. Update will update them to newer versions which still do not
  340. work on Macintosh TV.
  341.  
  342. * 3D images cannot be viewed with OpenDoc 3DMF Viewer 1.0.1
  343. with QuickDraw 3D 1.5 or 1.5.1 installed If QuickDraw 3D 1.5
  344. or 1.5.1 is installed, a message about insufficient memory
  345. appears when attempting to place a 3D image in an OpenDoc
  346. document. Increasing the viewer's memory size with the Get
  347. Info command in the File menu does not solve the problem. To
  348. use the 3DMF Viewer, install an earlier version of QuickDraw
  349. 3D.
  350.  
  351. * Internal speaker on Power Macintosh 5500 and 6500
  352. computers remains muted after disconnecting external
  353. speakers If the external speakers are connected when the
  354. computer starts up and then disconnected, the internal
  355. speakers remain muted. To work around this problem, restart
  356. the computer after disconnecting the external speakers. The
  357. internal speaker should work normally.
  358.  
  359. *  Adjusting the volume by pushing the Buttons on  the front
  360. of the Macintosh LC575 will not register on the Monitors and
  361. Sound Control Panel If you use the front bezel button to
  362. change volume on a Macintosh LC575 the change in volume will
  363. not register on the "Computer System Volume" slider in the
  364. Monitors and Sound control panel. You will only have the
  365. Monitors and Sound Control Panel on a LC575 if you have and
  366. AppleVision Monitor or are running a universal system.
  367.  
  368. * Macintosh customers with  the DayStar Digital 040 cards
  369. will need to do the following: If you use the DayStar
  370. Digital 040 card, you will have to first remove the card,
  371. then install Mac OS 7.6.1 Update, and then reinstall the
  372. DayStar Digital 040 card
  373.  
  374. * Two system folders when no desktop printer is selected If
  375. you notice two active system folders on your hard drive,
  376. create a desktop printer to work around this problem.  To
  377. create a desktop printer select the Chooser in the Apple
  378. Menu, select any printer, and then press the Create button.
  379.  
  380. Before you install
  381.  
  382. Use the Disk First Aid application program before you
  383. install the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update to check your hard disk for
  384. problems. Disk First Aid comes on the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update,
  385. Disk 1 disk and on the Disk Tools disk that came with your
  386. computer. Follow these steps:
  387.  
  388. 1. Insert the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update, Disk 1 disk into the
  389. floppy disk drive.
  390.  
  391. 2. Double-click the Disk First Aid icon to open it.
  392.  
  393. 3. Click the icon for the disk you are installing software
  394. on.
  395.  
  396. 4. Click Verify.
  397.  
  398. 5. If Disk First Aid tells you your disk appears to be OK,
  399. choose Quit from the File menu. If Disk First Aid reports
  400. problems with your hard disk, see the manual that came with
  401. your computer.
  402.  
  403. Note:  If you have a problem using Disk First Aid, see the
  404. manual that came with your computer.
  405.  
  406. Installing Mac OS 7.6.1 Update
  407.  
  408. Before you install Mac OS 7.6.1 Update, you should have at
  409. least 10 MB of disk space temporarily available on your hard
  410. disk.
  411.  
  412. It is very important that you follow these steps in order to
  413. install Mac OS 7.6.1 Update:
  414.  
  415. 1.  Open the Extensions Manager control panel.
  416.  
  417. 2.  Choose "Mac OS 7.6 Base" from the Sets pop-up menu.
  418. (This choice will only appear if you are using Mac OS 7.6.
  419. If it does not appear, you need to upgrade to Mac OS 7.6
  420. before installing this update.)
  421.  
  422. 3.  If you have third-party peripheral devices that are
  423. required for installation and that require an extension,
  424. turn those extensions back on. (Examples include video
  425. drivers, drivers for alternative input devices, network card
  426. drivers, and drivers for removable media drives, such as
  427. CD-ROM drives.)
  428.  
  429. 4.  Restart your computer.
  430.  
  431. 5.  Insert the Mac OS 7.6 Update, Disk 1 disk into the
  432. floppy disk drive.
  433.  
  434. 6.  Double-click the Installer icon to open it.
  435.  
  436. 7.  After you read the licensing agreement, click Agree to
  437. continue with the installation.
  438.  
  439. 8.  Make sure that the destination disk indicated on the
  440. screen is the disk that contains Mac OS 7.6. If the wrong
  441. disk name appears, click the Switch Disk button until the
  442. correct disk name appears.
  443.  
  444. 9.  Click Install.
  445.  
  446. 10.  Follow the instructions on the screen. Onscreen
  447. messages tell you when you need to insert the other disks.
  448.  
  449. 11.  When the installation is complete, click Restart to
  450. restart your computer.
  451.  
  452. 12.  Use the Extensions Manager to turn on additional
  453. extensions.
  454.  
  455. 13.  To use the extensions you turned on, restart the
  456. computer. (If you encounter problems, choose "Mac OS 7.6.1
  457. Base" from the Sets pop-up menu , restart your computer,
  458. then turn on other extensions one at a time to determine if
  459. one of them is causing the problem.)
  460.  
  461. 14. After you install Mac OS 7.6.1 Update, you may want to
  462. restart your Macintosh while holding the command (()()) and
  463. option key. This will rebuild the desktop on your Macintosh
  464. and ensure that no Icons are generic.
  465.  
  466. If you cannot install this update successfully:  If you have
  467. trouble installing this update, try choosing "All Off" from
  468. the pop-up menu in Step 2. If you failed to run the Disk
  469. First Aid application program, follow the steps in "Before
  470. you install," then follow the steps for installing Mac OS
  471. 7.6.1 Update.
  472.

  474. Updating a universal System Folder
  475.  
  476. A universal System Folder can be used to start up any
  477. computer that can use Mac OS 7.6.
  478.  
  479. Only some users need a universal System Folder. You might
  480. want to create a universal System Folder if you
  481. * start up different computer models using removable media
  482.   or an external startup disk
  483. * want to simplify support of multiple
  484.   users by giving all users the same System Folder
  485.  
  486. The universal System Folder will not contain
  487. * the Password Security control panel
  488. * ATI 3D Accelerator, ATI MPEG Accelerator, ATI YUV
  489.   Accelerator, and ATI 6500 Graphics Extension
  490. * ATI Graphics Accelerator 1.2.2 (ATI Graphics Accelerator
  491. 1.1.4 is installed in the universal System Folder)
  492. * the Infrared control panel, IrDALib, and IRLanScannerPPC
  493. * the CDStrip control strip module
  494. * the TV/FM 1.5.3
  495.  
  496. If you are responsible for only one computer, you shouldn't
  497. need to create a universal System Folder.
  498.  
  499. 1. Start with a universal System Folder created by the
  500. Install Mac OS program (available on the CD or floppy disks
  501. that came with Mac OS 7.6).
  502.  
  503. 2. Update your universal System Folder by installing Mac OS
  504. 7.6.1 Update.
